Terms and Conditions

Introduction The search for New Zealand’s most innovative and promising food and beverage start-up is underway. FoodStarter – a New World of Awesome Food Innovation is a competition to find an innovative, on-trend food or beverage product to take to market across the New World group in New Zealand.  

By entering this competition Entrants agree to the following terms and conditions.  

Organisers 

The competition is organised by Foodstuffs (NZ) Ltd (“Foodstuffs”) and Ministry of Awesome and is supported by ChristchurchNZ, New Zealand Food Innovation Network, FoodSouth, FoodBowl, Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development (ATEED), and Strategy Creative.   

Entering the Competition

  • All entries must be submitted on the official entry form no later than 11:59pm on Sunday 7th February 2021 (“competition closing date”).

  • Incomplete or late entries will not be considered.

  • All entries must be submitted through the competition’s official application portal Eventornado.

  • Product(s) entered must be food or beverage.

  • Products must be manufactured in New Zealand (imported ingredients are allowed).

Judging and Winners

  • A shortlist of 20 entries will be selected into the semi-final by the expert panel selected by Foodstuffs and Ministry of Awesome and announced on Friday 12 February 2021.

  • All the semi-finalists will need to prepare a longer application. The deadline for this application is 11:59pm Sunday 21 February 2021.

  • Out of the top 20 semi-finalists, 10 entrants will be selected and invited to the Pressure Cooker final event on Thursday 11 March 2021.

  • The 10 finalists will present their product in a pitch to the judging panel at The Pressure Cooker event and will be expected to provide samples of their product to the judging panel as part of their pitch. The winners will be announced on the night at the Pressure Cooker event. 

  • There are two winners in total:

    • One winner to be selected in the Small Supplier Category.

    • One winner to be selected in the Startup Category.

  • The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

  • The prize winner and finalists consent to participate and cooperate as required in all promotional activities relating to FoodStarter.

Prize Package

  • Each winning entry will receive a package of in-kind prizes worth up to $120,000 including:

    • National ranging in the New World supermarket network across New Zealand

    • Product Development and Manufacturing Support from New Zealand Food Innovation Network.

    • Expert Business Support and Mentorship from Ministry of Awesome.

    • Branding and Marketing support from Strategy Creative.

    • Business Incubation provided by Te Ōhaka - Centre for Innovation and Growth (if based in South Island) $2500 worth of grant for workspace at Te Haa O Manukau (if based in North Island).

    • National Media Coverage by organising partners’ owned media network.

  • This will be a contractual arrangement between the winning entrant and the organisers to ensure full commitment to the opportunity offered by the Prize Package.

  • The Prize Package or any part of it, is not exchangeable for cash. If you do not fully utilise any part of the Prize Package by [31/12/2022] then that part will be forfeited.

Privacy and Intellectual Property

  • By entering this competition each Entrant agrees that the Organisers may collect, store and use the information contained in their entry (“Entry Information”) as set out below.

  • Entry Information will be used to select the ten shortlisted entries and contact the finalists. 

  • New World and Ministry of Awesome websites will publish details of the 10 shortlisted entries including the title of each entry, the name of the Entrant and location and a short summary of the entry (the full details will not be published). The Organisers may also use this information for promotional purposes.

  • The Entry Information will be shared between the Organisers for the purposes of judging the competition.

  • All information provided by the Entrants will be collected, used, stored, disclosed and corrected in accordance with the Privacy Act 1993.

  • All Entrants have the right to access their information and request that any personal information held to be corrected. The Organisers may contact Entrants to provide feedback on their Entries, post competition analysis and other entrepreneurship opportunities.

  • Every Entrant warrants that to the best of their knowledge, their product details and branding ideas are new and original and not subject to any third-party claim, and that the Entrant owns all intellectual property, trademark or any other ownership and/or moral rights expressed in their entry.

  • The Organisers reserve the right to remove or delete any Entry and exclude the respective Entrant immediately if they have reason to believe that the entry breaches, or could be seen to be in breach of, any third party’s legal or moral right(s).

  • The Entrant grants the Organisers the right to use the Entrant’s Intellectual Property for the purposes of this Competition.

  • Except as provided for in these Terms and Conditions, the Organisers will keep Entry Information confidential.

  • Entrants retain ownership of their product, including any intellectual property therein.

  • Should an Entrant wish to use the fact they have entered this Competition as part of their own promotional activities then they must seek the consent of the Organisers prior to that activity commencing.

Exclusions

  • The Organisers reserve the right to exclude an Entrant who is in breach of the Terms and Conditions, misleads, deceives or acts in a fraudulent manner, or who acts in such a way as to, in the sole opinion of the Organisers, bring the Competition and/or the Organisers into disrepute.

  • Entrants take part in this Competition of their own volition. The Organisers will not be liable for any claims for loss, damage or injury whatsoever or for any physical or mental injury suffered by any Entrant, as a result of, or in connection with, this Competition.

  • The Organisers reserve the right to amend or change the Terms and Conditions at any time at their sole discretion, including extending, postponing or cancelling the competition.

  • The Terms and Conditions shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of New Zealand and shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of New Zealand courts.

We collect personal information from you, including information about your:

  • Name

  • Contact information

  • Product/business

  • We collect your personal information in order to allow you entry into the FoodStarter competition. Besides our staff, we share this information with:

    • Ministry of Awesome, FoodStuffs, ChristchurchNZ, New Zealand Food Innovation Network, FoodBowl, FoodSouth, ATEED and the FoodStarter judges in order to achieve the competition's goals.

  • Providing some information is optional. If you choose not to enter name, email address, phone number, and idea, we'll be unable to allow entry into the FoodStarter competition.

  • You have the right to ask for a copy of any personal information we hold about you, and to ask for it to be corrected if you think it is wrong. If you’d like to ask for a copy of your information, or to have it corrected, please contact us at info@ministryofawesome.com
